Sanitary Stainless Steel Materials Guide

Material selection is one of the most critical decisions in sanitary system design. The choice between SS304 and SS316L, surface finish requirements, and material certifications directly impact product quality, system longevity, and regulatory compliance.

SS304 stainless steel (1.4301)

SS304 is the most widely used austenitic stainless steel in food and dairy processing. It contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel, providing good corrosion resistance in neutral food environments. Suitable for applications where aggressive chemicals or high chloride levels are not present.

SS316L Stainless Steel (1.4404)

SS316L adds 2-3% molybdenum and has lower carbon content (0.03% max) compared to SS304. This provides superior resistance to chlorides, acids, and pitting corrosion. SS316L is the standard material for pharmaceutical, biotech, and high-purity applications. The low carbon content also prevents sensitization during welding.

Material Certifications

ONEMO supplies EN 10204 3.1 material certificates with full heat number traceability for all stainless steel products. This documentation includes chemical analysis, mechanical properties, and verification of compliance with applicable standards.
